Fuck you Kaiser Permanente.
Bucktooth begins
Hi, my name is Emma.
I spent most of my childhood and teen years tagging along to thrift stores across Southern California with my mom. Together, we’d dig around every secondhand shop from Lake Elsinore to Corona to Temecula. I'd haunt the clothing section while my mom rummaged in the home decor section (we’re both hoarders of vintage things). Throughout our after-school thrifting quests, I got reeeeeeal mad about how the baby clothes selection was so much cooler and more colorful than modern teen and adult clothes. The bright colorways, funky patterns, and free silhouettes allow for 10x the average comfort and cuteness of whatever you can buy in fast fashion stores today.
I thought it’d be pretty fun if someone were to create a clothing line based on these designs and then I thought maybe I could be the person to do that. Lots of anxiety, trial, and error dealing with clothing manufacturers who did not understand my absurd vision eventually led me to meeting Larissa, the owner of the brand Miracle Eye. I ran into her while trying to sell vintage clothes at a pop up and we became fast friends. She told me about how she started her ethical clothing business from the ground up with no hand-outs and reinspired me to give this idea another go. Her mother, Gloria, is the head seamstress for Miracle Eye and Larissa, being the angel that she is, let me know her mom is open to taking on a little more work! Now Gloria Jimenez, the coolest sewist in all of East LA, is making each dress by hand with love.
So here I am, taking design inspiration from antique and vintage baby dresses that I’ve collected from thrift stores and having Gloria size them up so that we can all wear them. It’s been 4 years since I first had the idea to start this project and here we are, two dresses down and a million to go.
Thank you so much for choosing to support Gloria and I.
Sending lots of love to you and yours,
Emma from bucktooth.
